課程概述

Empirical methods have revolutionized nearly all subfields of linguistics in the recent years. Understanding research methods used for collection and analysis of data in Linguistics has become critical. This course offers an introduction of research methodology in language studies for international exchange students who are interested in this issue. The course will cover how to develop (1) an interest and awareness of asking (good) questions, (2) a basic understanding of experimental designs, (3) a general understanding of types of data in Linguistics, (4) basic understanding of descriptive and inferential Statistics and how to apply them to analyze research data, and (5) a good understanding of different software tools and/or programming skills for analyzing linguistic data, both qualitatively and quantitatively. 

課程目標
The goal of this course is set to help students to develop an ability to obtain, organize, and analyze language related data. 
課程要求
Students are expected to complete weekly readings and assignments, and actively participate in class. There will be no required paper textbooks for this course; instead, a Course Reader compiled by me will be soon available. Additional lecture notes and slides will be made available in class.

Each class will be divided into two sessions: (i) lecture, and (ii) seminar presentation. I will also have extra lab sessions, in which students will learn to how to conduct an exploratory linguistic data analysis.

There will be no single textbook for this course. However, we will mainly refer to (Davis, 1995) (Dornyei, 2007) (Rasinger, 2008) and (Muller,2012) listed in the Reference.

There will be no exams. Grading is based on: Homework (20%); Class Discussion and Presentation (40%); Term paper (40%).
